Peake seemed to have figured it out alright.

Ah well, guess I'll just stick with their readers. I have some
software from BMW but I think I need to make some cables for it. I know
Uwe's programmer wanted to get my car in there for testing (96 M3) but I
don't think Uwe was on-board with the idea.

I don't think so. I'd bet that either Uwe's programmer quit or the job was just too difficult with all the control units different and BMW being generally...
