RE: [BantamTrailer] M416 Project

Pete,

Nice looking site.

I may have a couple of hints for you on your bed. I have an M100 that
was not quite as bad as yours, but still the bed gunwale tubing (as Wes
called it) was pretty bent. Mine had the same crushed corner as yours.
I was able to get it pretty straight by using an angle iron, some blocks
of wood, and some pipe clamps. Don't use C clamps as the clerks get
upset after you break four of them. Don't ask me how I know this. ;)
By putting the blocks between the angle iron and the gunwale on the
'close' points, and the pipe clamps on the 'far' points you can draw the
gunwale straight. Don't expect to get it straight on one shot. It took
me the better part of a Saturday to get it close. But I was working by
myself and part of that time was cursing at the lack of a third and
sometimes fourth hand. It would go faster with a helper.

To get the corner raised. I took the angle iron and clamped it to the
front of the frame, where the brake handle was. (I took it off for
this.) I left about 1 1/2 feet sticking out sideways. Then I bolted a
hilift jack through a hole in angle iron so it wouldn't slide. Then I
proceeded to jack the corner up. It takes quite a bit of leverage, I
ended up bending the angle iron and it is 2" X 2" X 1/4" thick. Be
careful, if it slips, you have a bunch of heavy things flying around.

I don't think I have any close ups of the trailer after I straightened
it, but here is a link to it before I did this work:

Subject: [BantamTrailer] M416 Project

I have detailed my M416 project here:
http://vegasauto.net/m416.html

I am mostly done. By mostly, I mean the entire chassis,
lights, etc all work and I have it registered. The main
portion left for me to complete is the bed which needs
a lot of work. I plan on taking it camping, as-is, during
the Thanksgiving weekend and then I'll tackle the bed.

Any thoughts and comments on either the web page
or how I can fix the bed are greatly appreciated.

Pete

The pounding under stress worked great. We did manage to slightly bend the square tube. We had it under quite a bit of pressure. It's got just a slight...
