Chris, As Alan has suggested use the high temperature paint as used for exhausts, it's better than Hammerite as it's matt, and matt paint radiates heat better...

Doug and Dick, I have had a look at the circuit diagram on the D14/4 and can see no reason why the rectifier should fry if the engine is run without a battery....

That was my only thought that maybe the Coils might be effected but I would be surprised if the voltage got that high to bother them. If the rectifier was hurt...
