Sorry for the delay in this reply. We are home from our vacation now and catching up on stuff.

We invited Guiness to witness our event but they had "other obligations" for the time period that we had set up. They wanted us to move the date back and compress it to fit their schedule. In an event like this when we are trying to go so far beyond the normal envelope, every little thing makes a big difference. We did it in late September/early October and what we would have lost by waiting was the long, hot, calm days. We were already into the late edge of our weather envelope and didn't want to waste any more time. Besides all the vacation time off from our jobs had already been arranged, the airline tickets had been bought, etc. Anyway, we did set a world record, regardless if Giuness was there or not. A few days after I got home from that event, I was watching the TV news, and they did a spot on the latest Guiness world record attempt. The event they covered instead of ours was a BRA unlatching contest and they didn't even set the record. I guess I lost a lot of respect for Guiness after that. If you want to read about our record it's all here  http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2783

There are quite a few MPG events around, but none with the exposure that the old Mobilgas economy run had. There is a growing number of us that are obsessed, maybe over obsessed, with MPG and keep track of every drop of fuel and every mile driven. My best tank on this vacation in my wife's VW Golf TDI has been 60.77. The last three years I have averaged over 94 in my Honda Insight. I was one of a team of 6 drivers that set the record for the longest distance driven on a single tank of gas in a stock production car. We went 2254 miles on 13.7 gallons in a Honda Insight to average 164 MPG. I might be considered one of the over obsessed.....Louis

Bill,

There are quite a lot of economy run films on youtube.

The RAC did an economy run using an A35 in 1956 and drove it all over the UK in pretty poor conditions and it managed 57.3mpg. This was the time of the Suez crisis when petrol was rationed. The Brits were (are?) obsessed with MPG (no matter how much the car costs in depreciation!) and the motor mags of the day are full of promises to make your car do more MPG. I still get people asking me how much my A35 does to the gallon, I haven't a clue, but I'm always polite!

Thanks, Louis.  Given the cost of fuel these days and the move toward more fuel efficient cars, I can't understand why Mobil doesn't revive its economy runs.

I'm an MPG fan and modern record holder myself and have collected several old magazines called "Small Car Parade". Very interesting reading on all small cars, both American and foreign. Several of the magazines have articles on the Mobilgas and other MPG events. I can't remember if there is any information on the FCCA but I'll look when we get home from vacation.... ..Louis
