Malcom, I just had a thought. Should I get worried that my engine hasn't been up
and running for 3 months and 10 days (the longest days of my life). The longest
time it wasn't up before this was 2 weeks. and that time It really hesitated
(ak.....ak...a....ak.....ak.....aaaaaaak..........Vrooooooom).

Don't ask about my car, the shop is taking their sweet time. I guess, its ok as
long as they can do a good job.

Hi there Lloyd
Welcome to the group,heh...heh... I'm the owner in case you didn't know
(Bragging again). But the guy who gets credit for knowing all the stuff about
astinas is .....(drumroll).... Malcom. So he deserves to be the moderator. Don't
you guys think its great that our moderator has actually been featured in Hot4s.
And Malcom, how about how the Astina handle against the civic? I've spanked
quite a couple on twisty roads in my N/A days. Maybe the Astina handles better
but then those civics might have 'less talented' drivers. I feel like I'm gonna
get flamed for this.
Can't wait to get my car back. It's in a body shop 4 repairs. Had an accident a
while ago. I'll probably have to drive slowly for a week or two to make sure the
mechanicals are allright then I can't wait to bug some more WRX's.

Hey Lloyd,
Great that you joined. The Handling Article is
in the files section as was done on my car.
Performance wise the stock car is good for about
170-180km/hr with the speed limited to 180km.
Place a turbo in there and they will rocket to
210km(Where I chickened out) & 235 that Pyn has
achieved. My 210 was at 6000 in 5th and I gave
up because the road was not flat and I developed
a scary bounce on the bumpy road. Not what your
looking for at 210km/hr. The car was still pulling
at this speed. ABS brakes are available
on the V6 model and from what I've seen of the setup
could be transplanted accross without to much fuss.
Unless someone else knows otherwise. Comparing to
other cars I can't really say as have not driven a
GTI and the only cars I can compare are Ozzie cars
which you may not recognise. Others that have driven
my car, suspension shop, mechanics etc all get out and
smile, and then say fuck its quick isn't it.
So it cant be to bad.

Hey chris,
I have added some picks of Front Spoilers for the Astina.
I have the same bar as the red car but without the centre
post. Even thou the car is owned by a friend I still think
the post looks stupid. Without gives a great wide grill look
which I love as it shows off my intercooler nicely.
Other pics include the gold Astina EZZY which features a modified
Mazdaspeed bottom lip. Another Mazdaspeed bar pic is the white
jap car with the twin headlight kit. The Red car has a Veilside
whole front bar and finally the Noble Green car has a Yoursports
front bar. As far as availability, the Mazdaspeed and the Cyber
front as per the red car & the Veilside are all available in
OZ. The Yoursports is from Japan. I hope this helps a bit.
Can check out prices for you but freight would be a killer due
to the size.

Hi! This group just got bigger by one Astina owner... :-) One with
lots of questions I might add.
My name's Lloyd. I live in South Africa and have a 1996 Astina 180
Se.
Bought it earlier this year with Fondmetal Tech 1 mags and a Thurston
grey spray job. The colour really makes the car stand out. New it was
about R143 000, so does anybody know why it doesn't have ABS brakes?
There's very little info on the car available on web sites around the
world. To my knowledge there are many variations on this vehicle,
some
the square shape, some the rounded one, with/without rear fin etc. If
you'd like I could supply a scanned photo of mine.
Does anyone have a copy of the Hot 4s article that was mentioned -
"Making your Astina handle" I believe it was. Or any other literature
on the car?
Out of cutiosity, what is the true top end if the vehicle
(unmodified). And how would you compare it on the road with cars
like
the Golf GTI?
No doubt it's a great car, and I enjoy it immensely.
Hope to hear from you guys...
Ciao!
Im really sorry for this really really late reply.really busy juggling
assignments and phase tests. and I'm still using the girlfriends pc so....;(
Well I got to confess to you, The koni dampers were smuggled into Brunei
from Singapore. So it didn't have any instructions or specs with it. That was
my friend's ingeneous idea to avoid the 5% tax on car parts imported to
Brunei. 5% of B$700 is just $35. well I guess that was just to get to brag
that i got it for $700 including the terra springs instead of B$1000
(honest) they charge here just for the dampers!!!
Well I know that when my friend asked for astina suspension parts, the koni
dealer showed all the parts numbered 42-123. The dampers and Terra springs
had these numbers. He also offered anti-sway bars (I don't know what brand)
front and rear with that part number. And I also found that number on my old
Hot Bits springs, 42-123. Personally I think that 5 digit is to short for a
part number so I 'm not too sure about it.
Again, sorry for the delay.

Dale,
With the warranty I take the opinion that if I change
something eg suspension then I know I have voided the warrenty
on that part of the car. This is offset by the warrenty
by the supplier of the product eg warranty by Koni for the shocks.
I have only ever taken my car to Mazda 3 times. Every time I took
the car to mazda some piss-ant apprentice would fuck with my stereo.
So I take mine to a name perf shop BD4's for servicing. Much
more professional & still cheaper than Mazda & as long as you use
mazda filters there is nothing Mazda can do ie will not void warranty.
Now with the turbo motor it doesn't matter anyway. It's my motor
I do what I want and if I blow it its my problem. Be more carefull
with your stock motor as if you change the exhaust or airfilter
this can cause problems even though the motor itself is untouched.
Have heard of RX7's only with mazdaspeed panel filters being voided
for any engine trouble. My insurance is so so. When I told them
it was turbo this placed me on the absolute edge of not being
insured with them. I also had to wear an $800 extra excess. When
I get around to it I also need to get the car valued so that I can
have it insured for $30-35k and not Market value plus wheels, stereo
etc. Chiptorque in QLD may help with the chip.
Sorry my email ended up being a book.

Oh Dale,
You hit a sore point about the resale price of a 97/98.
For me anyway. Bought mine new in 97. Have spent a packet
on the turbo conversion, wheels, suspension etc etc etc and
now the resale value is sweet FA. In 98 a 94 model would

Guys,
How are we today boys and girls.
My computer hasn't been working for the last 4 months and I have finally got
it working. Can you imagine the number of emails i had to read.
So I apologise for taking so long to respond.
I purhased a red 2000 Mazda 323 Astina Hatch. I really wanted a 97,98
shape but the
second had prices where close to the price I could get a new one for.
I really want to do some work on the car, but I don't want to mess with the
warranty. So I looking for some good ideas on things to do...?
I want to get the car lowered, and add some flare kits, and really do up
the interior.
I live in Brisbane, and work at the Sanctuary Cove Resort, near the Golf
Coast.
I must run, but I will send another message soon

Great to hear from you, Good news is that The car is fixable, and I'm
changing the colour red to white. Right after the accident, Iwas seriously
considering to sell the car after it got fixed. I really wanted Pulsar GTiR,
a reputable jap used car dealer quoted B$22 but i researched and found that
the last model was '94. We can't import cars used more than 5 years old. I
talked to that dealer and he apologised cause he forgot about that. I change
my mind now. I want to keep the Astina and hunt more WRX and skyline gts-s'
instead of getting picked on if i have a GTiR. As soon as I get back the car
and if it drives OK, i have to get me proper 3 or 2.5 inch downpipe and
exhaust. The cusco strut bar broke upwards in the middle at the adjusting
nut which is also how the hood got a sharp bulge there.Thats how bad the
accident was.
I also talked to the shop that did the engine swap for me. It was a
GTX....bummer. Hoping it was a GTR, serves me right for not doing much
research on this. He did say that last july was when he brought back my
engine from japan, says that he got to drive the car before cutting the car
half, felt like a healthy 200 to 230 Hp WRX (butt dynoed). He said that this
engine has some engine mods, not too sure what mods though. probably
explains the unlabeled turbo. Currently I'm telling everybody I have to put
back the B6 (yeah right!) cause the block cracked and insurance issues
hehe..heh.
By the way hows the clutch, I'll need advise on the clutch myself. What was
your original engine, 2.0 V6 perhaps. I would have tought that Astinas
elsewhere got BP at least and mot my anemic B6.

Hi guys
Just a quick mail to introduce myself,
My name is Chris, I live in Ireland (just outside Belfast), and I've just
bought a 1995 Mazda Lantis/323F/Astina 2.0i V6 in red from Japan .
It's currently sitting on a boat somewhere in the Pacific and I can't wait
to get my hands on it :)
It's a "Type R" version - something to to with more power (but I can't find
any info anywhere), with 43000kms and in A1 condition.
I had a Mazda Eunos 500 until some git drove into me and wrote it off
(damn!) this car has the same engine but supposedly more powerful so as it's
smaller than the 500 (which was quick to say the least) this should be
bloody quick!
Cheers
Chris
Kamarul,
Did your car end up being a writeoff.
I hope not. Who am I going to talk to
about turbo astina stuff. Apart from the
car how is Uni and life in general.

Mal
Kamarul,
Have you noticed that none of the mails you/I have posted
never appear in the message folder. Is there something you
didn't do when you set up the group.
Mal
Hello Dale,
Can see you joined this very selective group. Yeah right.
So man tell us about your Astina. Both Kamarul & myself
have BA Astina's with BP turbo conversions.

Can see that the members crept up to 5 and then dropped
back down to 2. Think that's because there were no postings
so OK i'll go first. I have a 97 Astina which has been
turbocharged with a BPT motor. This has transformed the
car from not just looking like a rocket to one that actually
feels like one. Presently my mods only include 3" exhaust
and K&N pod filter. Intercooler is Evo 4 size and I have a
choice of Turbosmart type 2 & Evo 4 Blow off valves (1 for
quiet & 1 for sneezing). I have 17" Viper DTM Executive with
215/40 Faulken GRB. Body kit is made up of Factory wing,
Modified Talon side skirts and a Cyber modified front lip
with mesh. Suspension is a full Whiteline setup as listed
in Hot 4's magazine - How to make your Astina Handle.
I hope that this group grows with others to share their tips
and traps so that we can have some damn fine astina's out there
to make people think/rethink of them as a "Hot" 4 cylinder car.
