Hi Paul, You just described the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve, not the air pump. Blocking the EGR can, in some instances, cause pinging/pre-detonition....

If you are concerned about the heat from the exhaust, I would look into installing insulation specifically designed to reflect the heat away from the underside...
