The E-30 318i doesn't have a rev limiter, Bill. One possibility - your car's distributor is worn to the point that it begins to cause the stumble at 5000 RPM....

Actually the L-Jet system on the 318i does have a rev limiter in it. Because it's an anolog system it can vary from car to car. My 84' 318i rev limited at 6400...

there is a rev limiter, but it shouldn't come until about 6500. However, a lot of 318 tachs that I see, for whatever reason start to read too low as the revs...

This could be tune: you might need to advance or retard the timing, OR it might be fuel pump -- on my race car, when hot, it stumbles at 5k and picks up at 6k....
